As you might expect, HR hiring tracks general hiring trends almost exactly… when American companies need more workers, they need more HR professionals to assist them!

Selecting a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resource Management
Baccalaureate degree programs are intended to produce well-rounded graduates with a broad range of knowledge and skills in creative and analytical thinking. Because of this, every bachelor’s program will include a heavy rotation of general education requirements.
There are three basic types of bachelor degrees found offering HRM training:
- Bachelor of Arts
- Bachelor of Science
- Bachelor of Business Administration
For a bachelor of arts, the general education requirements will be more oriented toward liberal arts, social studies, history, and other classical studies. Some math and science classes will also be mandatory.
For a bachelor of sciences, you will find the requirements more heavily weighted toward math and hard science classes, although some English and social studies courses will still be necessary. In HRM programs, these science classes tend toward psychology, economics, and accounting.
Bachelor of business administration programs focus on strictly business topics. Accounting, business communications, finance, and other operational classes will feature more commonly.
BS and BBA programs are usually more profession-oriented than BA programs and may prepare you for a more advanced position in the field on graduation. In practical terms, however, there is little long-term career impact based on the different types of degree.
Many schools offer HRM-centric degrees as specializations or subsets of their general business degrees. You can find these program with titles such as:
- Bachelor of Science in Business Administration – Human Resource Management
- Bachelor of Science in Business Studies in Human Resource Management
SHRM-Approved Curriculum
At this level, you should also investigate how closely the program complies with recommendations from the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). This industry association has published a guidebook and templates for university-level HR programs at the BA, BS, and BBA levels, as well as for master’s degree programs.
Online Programs
There are a number of HRM bachelor’s programs that are available exclusively or partially online. These programs are usually oriented toward working professionals and non-traditional students who have challenges with the timing and location of traditional colleges classes.
This means that the courses are usually self-paced, with relaxed time requirements for completion of coursework. You can also time shift your viewing of class materials, streaming video and other online presentations at any time.
The classes are also location-independent, so you can take them from anywhere in the world without having to relocate. This allows you to select a program that has the right fit for your goals without the difficulty and expense of moving.
These factors, plus the typically lower costs of online delivery of classes, can make online programs a benefit for you even if you’re a traditional student.
Transfer
If you have previously earned an associate’s degree, you may be able to transfer some or all of your credits to count against the 120 credits required in a bachelor’s HRM program. The transferability depends largely on the existence of a transfer agreement between the two schools, or the accreditation status of the associate’s program if there is no agreement.
Transfer agreements usually are made with regional schools or those within the same state. This means the colleges have aligned their curriculums so that you will receive substantially the same two-year education in either course, and credits will be accepted without question. Without the agreement, the school you are transferring to will typically evaluate your associate’s transcript on a course-by-course basis. They will decide which classes are close enough to their own that credit can be offered.
Certification
Some programs also offer preparation for obtaining certification in different industry-standard certificate programs, including:
- Professional in Human Resources
- Senior Professional in Human Resources
- Global Professional in Human Resources
- SHRM-Certified Professional
Although these are not in any way related to collegiate programs, they can be a real benefit when you are applying for HRM jobs, particularly if you do not possess any other prior experience in the field.
Core Curriculum and Electives Found in a HRM Bachelor’s Programs
Once you get through the general studies courses that will take up most of your first two years, you’ll be into more specialized classes that are directly related to your major. These fall under two general categories in most HRM bachelor’s programs.
Business Core Classes
HRM degrees are closely related to general business degrees and usually involve a set of core classes that focus on business topics, especially those that relate to HR topics. These include courses in:
Business Law and Ethics
Although business ethics are a facet of every role at any company, it often falls to HR to determine where the lines are to be drawn. Your education will include general business law and ethics topics to help you understand how to make those decisions. You may receive some education in contract law, especially as it pertains to employment contracts, and go over non-disclosure agreements and their interpretations at the state and federal level.
Finance, Accounting, and Economics
Labor costs are the single largest expense in almost any business, so HR professionals need to understand finances and accounting to help make solid hiring and management decisions. A look at the larger economic environment is usually part of this coursework, as well as the basics of keeping books and the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) standards that businesses follow. You’ll learn something of how to perform quantitative analysis and how to evaluate salary and benefit costs in terms of market position.
Business Operations
HRM degrees are a type of business degree, so you’ll study general principles of operating a business as part of your program. This will include subjects like strategic policy making and implementation, analysis, procurement, and supply chain management. You’ll probably learn about the principles of marketing and sales.
Human Resource Core Classes
Your core HRM education will come in the form of the following categories of subjects:
Human Relations
The basis of the field lies in understanding the strategic role of managing human relations in a business context. Basic studies of how humans interact, influenced by rewards and punishments, training, and regulations are an introductory component of HRM degree programs. More advanced classes can include studies in intercultural management, diversity, and globalized workforce management. How to assess and establish organizational culture may also be offered as a dedicated course.
Leadership and Management
Both on a personal level and in advisory capacities, you will use the information from these courses to influence organizational design and change management and strategic decision making processes. The courses cover important principles of management including:
- Goal-framing
- Perceptions and motivation
- Building high-performance teams
- Influences on group behavior
Communication and Information Systems
Information systems have an impact on every department in the modern business. For HRM programs, you’ll study how social media, e-mail, and the internet impact HR concerns. You may also study how those systems and software can help reduce HR workload. This includes their uses in fostering organizational communication and team-building.
Employment Law and Collective Bargaining
It’s the responsibility of HR professionals to be the organizational resource for topics on employment law and labor relations, and these classes are where you’ll receive the educational grounding in labor law, unions, and employment contracts. You’ll learn about collective bargaining agreements, including how they are reached and administered. Affirmative action and equal employment opportunity laws will be covered. The responsibility of businesses to monitor and eliminate discrimination and sexual harassment, as well as documenting and reporting such issues, will be taught.
Talent Acquisition and Hiring
Methods for creating job descriptions and establishing base pay rates are considered. You’ll learn about the effects of market forces on the labor pool and the considerations that job candidates use in evaluating positions. The hiring process will be described, including the common steps of conducting background checks and researching candidate resume claims. You’ll probably learn about how to apply social media research skills as a way of checking candidate backgrounds.
Compensation and Benefits
A major part of human resources, especially from the employee perspective, revolves around compensation and benefits. You’ll be taught multidisciplinary theories underlying the design of payment systems and how to calculate total compensation for positions including various benefit packages. You’ll learn what types of benefits are common in American business as well as the strategic consideration between selecting and offering them. Finally, you’ll learn about compensation and benefits administration, including how to manage payroll systems, enroll employees in benefit programs, and handle claims and disputes.
Training and Development
Training and development is a focus both for reasons of employee retention and to ensure that the organization has a skilled and competent workforce to execute its mission. You will study topics involved in selecting, administering, and evaluating training programs. Methods for evaluating individual skills and creating development plans as well as assessing progress and alternatives will be taught.
Capstone or Internship
Many bachelor’s programs in HRM now include a capstone course or internship option for putting your education to the test just before graduation. A capstone project usually involves a small team addressing a research or other real-world problem through analysis and recommendations. Sometimes these can involve corporate partners outside the university, in which case you’ll interact with real business leaders and HR professionals already in the field.
The same is true of an internship, where you will take a temporary position in a real, functional HR department performing actual work for credit in the field. This offers invaluable exposure to real world conditions and an opportunity to make contacts that can boost your career later on. It also helps you validate your training and education against real life business processes and problems.
Accreditation Standards for Bachelor’s Degrees in HR Management
Accreditation is simply a third-party guarantee that the school or program that has been accredited meets certain minimum standards in pedagogical and administrative aspects including:
- Curriculum selection and development
- Hiring and evaluation of faculty
- Student grading and support
Most accrediting agencies do their best to support flexibility and academic freedom in evaluating these choices, so programs are not simply cut from the same mold. However, a properly accredited program will receive greater respect and consideration than one that has not been accredited.
In the U.S., the highest standards are generally thought to be maintained by six regional accrediting bodies:
- Accrediting Commission for Western Association of Schools and Colleges
- Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities
- Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools
- New England Association of Schools and Colleges
- Higher Learning Commission (North Central)
- Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
Each of these has been recognized by Department of Education (DOE).
Specialized Business Accreditation
Because HR is so closely aligned with business education, and is often delivered as part of business degrees or business schools, it’s also worth looking at the speciality accreditation status of these programs. The DOE recognizes three major specialized accreditors that looks specifically at the quality of business programs.
- The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB)
- Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP)
- International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE)
Although HR degree programs are not considered separately, the overall quality of business faculty and pedagogical standards are likely to be higher at any school that has been accredited by one or more of these agencies.
SHRM Curriculum Compliance
Although it is not, strictly speaking, an accrediting body, SHRM also works with schools to assess HRM programs specifically and keeps a list of those that comply with their model curriculum. Schools that meet their curriculum standards can be found in the HR Program Directory.
